Bologna Beats: Your Guide to the City's Live Music Calendar

Bologna has always punched far above its weight musically. This is the city of Lucio Dalla and a university crowd that has kept independent venues alive for fifty years, and its concert calendar reads accordingly: dense, adventurous and spread across some of the best small and mid-sized rooms in Italy. Here is what the coming months look like, starting this week. First up, on Tuesday 21 July, TROPICO plays BOnsai, the open-air summer stage that has quickly become one of the city's favourite warm-weather haunts. Davide Petrella — the songwriter behind hits for half of Italian pop's front rank — performs his own material as TROPICO with a warmth and melodic instinct that make his shows feel like listening to a friend's best songs. A balmy July evening outdoors is the ideal frame for it. Then, after the August pause, Bologna's real season begins — and the autumn line-up is a feast. On Monday 21 September, Dan Bejar brings Destroyer to the Locomotiv Club, the beloved venue by the train yards that has hosted practically every important indie act of the last two decades. Destroyer's literate, saxophone-haunted art-pop rewards a small room, and rooms do not come much better than this one. The Locomotiv double-dips in October: The Lemon Twigs — the D'Addario brothers' gloriously retro power-pop project — arrive on Friday 2 October, and English psych-rockers Temples follow on Thursday 22 October. Between them, on 20, 21 and 22 October, comedy takes over the grand Teatro Duse as Fabio De Luigi performs three nights of "BIOL - In Carne e Ossa", his first live tour in years — expect all three to sell through quickly. The Estragon, Bologna's other essential room, carries the season from there. Willie Peyote — the sharpest tongue in Italian rap — brings his Club Tour on Tuesday 27 October; the velvet-voiced Aiello follows on Sunday 8 November; and Giuse The Lizia, one of the brightest of the new pop generation, closes the year there on Friday 11 December. Looking further ahead, two dates deserve a place in any diary. On Monday 1 March 2027, stand-up star Luca Ravenna plays the EuropAuditorium with "Flamingo". And on Tuesday 8 June 2027 comes the big one: Pinguini Tattici Nucleari bring their stadium tour to Stadio Dall'Ara — the local-adjacent heroes (Bergamo, but Bologna claims every band eventually) playing the biggest stage the city has. What makes gig-going in Bologna special is the texture around it. The Locomotiv and Estragon crowds spill out into a city built for the post-show hour: osterie that serve until late, the porticoes glowing amber, Piazza Verdi still humming with students at midnight. A concert here is never just a concert; it is an evening that starts with tortellini and ends with a nightcap under a five-hundred-year-old arcade.
